Carlisle, PA at a Glance
Of the 119 cities found within the Cumberland County, Carlisle is recognized
as the County Seat. Incorporated as a city in 1751, Carlisle was chosen by George
Washington to establish the United States Army’s first arsenal and school, largely
based on the fact that the area was first occupied by the Confederates. Preserving
memories of the Civil War and the Victorian Era, the Carlisle
Barracks and United States Army War College has housed many institutions
since it was established in 1757, including the first off-reservation school
in the United States, the Carlisle
Indian Industrial School. In existence for more than 39 years, the intention
of this school was to assimilate American Indian children into society. Visitors
can customize their interaction with Carlisle’s community, eclectic architecture
and the 18th and 19th century tavern houses by participating in a half-day,
one-day or three-day self-guided tour.
