General William Thompson’s Rifle Battalion was the first battalion authorized by Congress in June 1775. His organization later became the First Pennsylvania Continental Regiment. His gravesite is available for viewing at Carlisle’s old graveyard.
This historic site is the resting place of the re-interred remains of 186 American Indian children who passed away while attending the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. The school, founded in 1879, was established to educate and assimilate American Indian children into society. The graveyard is located on the grounds of the Carlisle Barracks towards the back gate.
