Carlisle Indian Industrial School Graveyard This historic site is the resting place of the re-interred remains of 186 American Indian children who passed away while attending the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. The school, founded in 1879, was established to educate and assimilate American Indian children into society. The graveyard is located on the grounds of the Carlisle Barracks towards the back gate. Grave of General William Thompson General William Thompson’s Rifle Battalion was the first battalion authorized by Congress in June 1775.
