Carlisle Indian Industrial School

The Carlisle Indian Industrial School was the first off-reservation school established in the United States. It was founded in 1879 with the intention of educating and assimilating American Indian children into society. The school was in existence for more than 39 years and had more than 10,000 children enrolled. Located at the Carlisle Barracks, guided tours are available year-round.

Old Court House

The Old Court House, built in 1846, replaced an earlier Court House that was destroyed by arsonists in 1845. The columns of the Court Hourse still bear the pock marks made by J.E.B. Stuart and Fitzhugh Lee on their way to Gettysburg in 1863. Self guided-tours of the court house are also available.

Ephraim Blaine House

The Commissary General during the Revolutionary War, Col. Ephraim Blaine, began construction on this house in 1794. The house retains much of its original interior, which can be viewed through a self-guided tour.

Carlisle Indian Industrial School Graveyard

This historic site is the resting place of the re-interred remains of 186 American Indian children who passed away while attending the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. The school, founded in 1879, was established to educate and assimilate American Indian children into society. The graveyard is located on the grounds of the Carlisle Barracks towards the back gate.

Carlisle Barracks and United States Army War College

Established in May 1757, the Carlisle Barracks is the second oldest army posts in the United States. During the French and Indian War, British and Provincial troops were trained here. In 1807, the post became known as the Carlisle Barracks. Since then, it has housed many institutions such as the School of Cavalry Practices from 1879-1918, the Carlisle Indian Industrial School from 1879-1918, the Medical Field Service School 1920-1946 and the U.S. Army War College since 1951. Tours of the campus are available with reservation.

Two Mile House

This historic federal limestone building contains 12 rooms, 10 which contain fireplaces that feature Doric-style pilasters and a central panel. The Two Mile House is available for public viewing May-September from 1pm-4pm on Wednesdays. The house may also be rented for special events.

Marianne Moore House

This historical building was the home of Marianne More from 1896-1916. Marianne won the Pulitzer Prize for Literature, the Bollingen Prize in Poetry and the National Book Award. Self-guided tours of the home are available.

1st Presbyterian Church

The 1st Presbyterian Church is recognized as the oldest public building in Carlisle, and therefore as a historic attraction. President George Washington attended this church on October 5, 1794, before marching off to Western Pennsylvania to the whiskey rebellion. The public is welcome to attend Sunday worship at 10:45am or prayer time at 9:15am.
